This submachine gun filled National Guard arsenals after the Army replaced it with newer weapons. However, the "Grease Gun" was simple and cheap to manufacture so there are still quite a few still in use. | |

Background
The "grease gun," named for its passing resemblance to the mechanical tool, was developed as a cheaper and more accurate replacement for the aging M1928 Thompson. In 1941, the U.S. observed the effectiveness of cheap all-metal submachineguns such as the German MP38/40, and decided to manufacture its own stamped-metal submachinegun in late 1942 as the M3. However, despite its cheap and efficient mechanical design, this resulted in very cumbersome maintenance for soldiers due to unconventional machining. Some of these issues were addressed with the M3A1, but many soldiers still made field modifications for ease of use and maintenance. The M3A1 variant was not actually used in World War II -- it had entered production too late. However, it was used throughout the proxy wars in Korea and Vietnam. Despite the usage issues, the gun performed well in combat.
