Basic information

The 9mm mauser is a great handgun for the new player, as it possesses the "Accurate" weapon perk. It can be made without any profession and has low crafting requirements. It also uses relatively cheap ammo, 9mm and 9mm ball.

Background

A design that is well over 300 years old, the C96 "Broomhandle" pistol was first produced by a German arms manufacturer called Mauser. Mauser's name is often (mistakenly) used to designate the pistol, which can be quite confusing since Mauser's popular Karabiner 98k rifle is also referred to as a "Mauser" by the ill-informed. One of the first semi-automatic pistols ever produced, it has an internal magazine that must be loaded by stripper clip, much like the bolt-action rifles of the era. Fully-kitted C96s would come with a detachable wooden shoulder stock, which also doubled as the weapon's carrying case.

Original productions were chambered for Mauser's own 7.63x25mm cartridge, which had high velocity, offering the gun excellent range and penetration for its class. With a shoulder stock, and further foregrip modification, the weapon was considered a carbine, rather than a pistol. However, such an esoteric and antique cartridge was lost to history before even the Great War. This wastelander's model, based on the original design, is chambered for the far more common 9mm Parabellum round. Fortunately, the weapon's long barrel still affords it excellent accuracy.

Obtaining

  • One can be purchased from most traders.
  • It can be Crafted.
  • Can be looted from players or off of an NPC.

NPCs in the following encounters are known to carry the 9mm Mauser:

  • Ghoul Scavengers
  • Highwaymen
  • Junktown Scouts
  • Raiders
  • Scavengers
  • Trader

Tactics

Its low damage makes it obsolete for very high levels. Therefore it is best used in an aimed shot capacity to score critical hits.
